Grubmaster Guide
Meal Planning for Campouts:
A grubmaster is a scout responsible for the planning, purchasing, and preparation of food for their patrol during camping trips. This leadership role involves creating a menu within budget, accounting for food allergies, making a grocery shopping list, managing food storage, and ensuring enough nutritious food for all participants. The Grubmaster is a crucial position and helps Scouts learn valuable skills for rank advancement and merit badges.
Where to start:
-
Your patrol leader will share the number of scouts in your patrol that will attend the campout and if any scouts have food allergies.
-
Once you know the number of scouts going camping, complete the Patrol Meal Planning Worksheet and plan to buy only as much food as your patrol will need.
-
Before you purchase food, text or email a photo of your Patrol Meal Planning Worksheet to Jacquie Carlton for approval by Wednesday before a campout (713-591-9476 or carltonji@yahoo.com).
-
Typically, grubmasters buy food on Thursday night before the campout. Cost per scout should not exceed $20 for a normal Friday night start campout with 4 meals.
-
Please place cold foods in your refrigerator at home and only transfer it to a cooler with ice right before you leave for camp.
Reimbursement of food costs:
For reimbursement of food costs please submit a request for payment via Zelle to the Troop Treasurer Nagesh Thukral (nagesh.thukral@gmail.com). Text a photo of receipts to Mr. Thukral as backup for the reimbursement (832-654-0236).
Meal Tips:
Breakfast – Eggs are quick and easy to prepare and packed with protein. Flour tortillas make good wrappers for anything like breakfast burritos. Limit the sugars at breakfast. Plan a bigger breakfast on Saturday and a cold, quick breakfast on Sunday before departure.
Lunch – Remember you will be very busy during the day. Cold sandwich / wrap, hot dogs, etc will get you in and out quickly with very little mess.
Dinner – This is the meal to really show-off your cooking skills! Try Dutch oven cooking or a one pot meal. Grill chicken and make fajitas. Try not to repeat. Learn a new dish – experiment.
